At least 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” declared the country's president.

The president reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an rapid pace, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
