Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple conversations following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
