The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a major honors show approaches, there’s always a demand to include of new categories to honor unsung work and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
