Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such medications need to be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Doctors propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
